The Garden Route may be South Africa’s most famous road trip, but it is far from the country’s only spectacular drive. Mountains, coastlines, forests, farmland and vast semi-desert landscapes can be experienced from roads across the country.
These scenic drives that rival the Garden Route deserve a place on any South African road-trip list.
Panorama Route, Mpumalanga
The Panorama Route passes through forests, mountains and dramatic sections of the Mpumalanga escarpment. Popular stops include God’s Window, Bourke’s Luck Potholes, the Three Rondavels and several waterfalls near Sabie and Graskop.
Views across the Blyde River Canyon make this one of South Africa’s most impressive inland drives. It can also be included as part of a longer trip to the Kruger National Park. South African Tourism

Route 62, Western and Eastern Cape
Route 62 offers an inland alternative to the coastal N2. It passes through farming areas, mountain ranges and towns such as Robertson, Montagu, Barrydale, Calitzdorp and Oudtshoorn.
Wine farms, restaurants, farm stalls and historic buildings provide plenty of reasons to stop. The changing landscape, from fertile valleys to the dry Klein Karoo, is a major part of the journey. Route 62

Clarence Drive, Western Cape
Clarence Drive follows the R44 between Gordon’s Bay and the Overberg. The road runs between the Hottentots Holland Mountains and the coastline, offering wide views across False Bay.

Midlands Meander, KwaZulu-Natal
The Midlands Meander is less about reaching one destination and more about taking time to stop along the way. Its network of routes passes through green farmland, small towns and countryside near the Drakensberg foothills.

Golden Gate Highlands, Free State
The roads through Golden Gate Highlands National Park are surrounded by grasslands, sandstone cliffs and mountain scenery.

Klipspringer Pass, Western Cape
Klipspringer Pass runs through Karoo National Park near Beaufort West. It provides a very different experience from South Africa’s greener coastal routes.

Namaqualand, Northern Cape
Namaqualand’s wide roads, granite outcrops and open landscapes are impressive throughout the year. During the spring flower season, sections of the region become especially popular as colourful wildflowers appear across the landscape.
Flower displays depend on seasonal rainfall and weather conditions, so travellers should check local reports before planning a dedicated flower trip.

Sani Pass, KwaZulu-Natal
Sani Pass climbs through dramatic mountain scenery towards the Lesotho border. It is one of South Africa’s most memorable mountain routes, but it is not a casual drive.
Road conditions can be difficult, and travellers must confirm current vehicle, border and documentation requirements before departure. Those without suitable experience can join a guided 4x4 tour.
Best for: Mountain scenery, 4x4 travel and high-altitude views.
Plan More Than the Destination
South Africa’s scenic routes are best enjoyed slowly. Allow time for viewpoints, small towns, walking trails and unplanned stops rather than treating the road as a quick connection between two places.
Check road conditions, weather forecasts, fuel availability and opening times before leaving. Mountain passes and remote routes may be affected by rain, snow, fire or maintenance work.
The Garden Route deserves its reputation, but these alternatives show just how varied a South African road trip can be.
